Elementary & Middle School
• Interactive & Playful Learning:
The curriculum for younger participants is designed to be highly interactive. Instructors use hands-on demonstrations, colorful visual aids, and engaging tutorials to explain basic design concepts and sneaker anatomy.
• Step-by-Step Guidance:
Activities are broken down into simple, digestible steps. For example, children learn about color mixing, pattern selection, and basic modifications while working closely with an instructor, ensuring that no step is overwhelming.
• Collaborative Group Work: Activities include small-group efforts that encourage communication and creativity. This collaborative environment helps younger students build confidence and learn through social interaction.
• Safe and Fun Environment:
Every session incorporates plenty of structured time for experimentation with materials—emphasizing fun over precision, so mistakes become learning experiences rather than setbacks.
Middle School to High School
• Advanced Techniques & Design Theory:
With older students, the content deepens to include the basics of design thinking, material functionality, and sneaker history—especially highlighting Chicago’s iconic sneaker culture. Discussions move toward trends, brand influences, and even entrepreneurial insights as they relate to footwear design.
• Project-Based Learning:
Teen participants work on longer-term projects where they develop and refine their own sneaker concepts. This process includes sketching advanced designs, experimenting with custom color palettes, and utilizing more intricate techniques in material handling and embellishment.
• Self-Direction & Critical Thinking:
The workshop encourages self-directed learning, prompting teens to make independent design choices and articulate their creative process. Instructors act as mentors, providing individual feedback and fostering an environment where critical thinking and personal expression are central.
• Local Inspiration:
Every session weaves in elements of Chicago’s vibrant sneaker and urban culture—from historical influences to contemporary street style. Young designers get the opportunity to learn how local trends can influence and inspire their creative process.
